What do we really know about the chemicals in big brand nappies?
If you did would you do anything about it? If you knew that most non-eco and even some eco nappies contain endocrine disruptors, carcinogens and heavy metals.
The average child in western countries will wear nappies for 2.5 years, equating to nearly 1000 days in nappies or 21,900 hours. At 6 nappy changes per day, that’s 5,475 nappies in their lifetime where they are being exposed to toxins, particularly dioxins.
Dioxins are a by-product of chlorine, which is used in the bleaching process to make nappies white. These dioxins accumulate in the body throughout children’s lifetime. Dioxin exposure as a child will impede the immune system of the individual forever. It means their immune system will never be as strong as what they were.
Everyone nowadays, is aware of BPA used in bottles and plasticware. But nappies contain just as much, seeping into the skin of the babies. Phylates are in the plastic waterproofing layer of all nappy brands except those who specify plastic free. These phylates are continually released into the air or leaching from wet nappies which infants breathe all day long.
Dyes found in the coloured prints on nappies leading to allergic skin reactions through thin infant skin. Perfumes affect infants organ systems that are both immature and exquisitely sensitive to chemical insults. The beautiful baby powder scents found in nappies seem innocent enough however are laden with chemicals and respiratory irritants. Manufactures are not required to disclose the chemicals used in fragrances.
